Originally published in the U.K., Mary Street’s ingenious retelling of Jane Austen’s classic story now makes its U.S. debut-to the delight of the fans of Austen’s comic masterpiece of divine romance. In Fitzwilliam Darcy, Austen created the ultimate romantic hero. Yet Pride and Prejudice reveals little of Darcy’s innermost thoughts.

Here, Street unveils the true motives and mysteries of Elizabeth Bennet’s enigmatic suitor. Through Darcy’s eyes we discover the reality of his relationships with his sister Georgiana, his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam, the dastardly Wickham, his friend Bingley, and his formidable aunt, Lady Catherine. And of course, all his memorable encounters with Elizabeth, from that first view of her fine eyes to his disastrous proposal, and then to a pride and arrogance tempered by an unquenchable love.

This was the first Pride and Prejudice Adaption that I ever purchased. I searched bookstores for it for almost 5 years before I found a new edition in the original cover.

I purchased the book from a basement bookshop in Chicago and was very excited when I learned that the owner of the bookstore’s late husband had been college roommate to the original publisher in Scotland (at least I think it was Scotland). Needless to say I forked out my debit card and was very happy to purchase this fabulous novel. To this day it remains one of my favorites.

Aidan retells the now iconic story of Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Fitzwilliam Darcy as he visits Netherfield with his good friend Charles Bingley and his sisters. The austere Darcy takes life very seriously, and is at a loss as to how he became friends with the amicable Bingley. Darcy has escaped many marriage-minded mothers and their daughters, which is why he initially disdains the Bennet family. Once he gets to know Elizabeth, however, he realizes his mistake, but his attempts to apologize to her only make him act even more awkwardly in her presence. The first in Aidan’s planned trilogy of improvisations on Jane Austen concludes with the infamous Netherfield ball. Austen fans will relish the tale’s retelling from Darcy’s perspective as well as new characters, including Fletcher, the insightful and amusing valet who apparently approves of the charming Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Duty and DesireDuty and Desire: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman (Fitzwilliam Darcy Gentleman) Others Fan Fiction

The second installment in Aidan’s Fitzwilliam Darcy trilogy has the Pride and Prejudice hero wrestling with his infatuation with Elizabeth Bennet. While Aidan’s Darcy exhibits the class snobbery and noblesse oblige readers expect of him, he also has a purpose: Darcy decides he must find another woman “of his own station as beautiful and blessed with wit as Elizabeth Bennet, whose charms would banish her from his mind and displace her in his heart.” While searching for this woman, Darcy looks after his sister, Georgiana, who is emerging from a long depression. Aidan is comfortable with the overwrought Regency prose and tropes (“The horses, atremble with desire for home, broke into a canter from which no one in the coach wished to dissuade them”) and, instead of imitating Austen, convincingly makes Darcy’s story her own. Darcy and his loyal valet, Fletcher, travel to Norwycke Castle for a house party where murky inheritances, debt, husband-hunting aristocrats, the supernatural and dead ancestors commingle, resulting in a good time for fans of the series and those enamored of Austen.

The third in Aidan’s originally self-published Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy (following An Assembly Such as This, 2006 and Duty and Desire, 2006) begins when Darcy pays his yearly visit to his aunt, Lady Catherine, and discovers that Miss Elizabeth Bennet is staying with the Collinses nearby. After his disastrous proposal of marriage, he returns to London and attends a soiree where he is almost drugged, and . . . well, most readers will be glad to get through the book’s long middle section and back to Austen territory. Things pick up again with Darcy’s chance encounter with Elizabeth at Pemberley, and the narration of Darcy’s efforts to clean up the mess created by Willoughby’s elopement with the youngest Bennet sister is thoroughly engrossing. Although acquaintance with Pride and Prejudice is not essential to the enjoyment of any title in the series, Austen fans will be delightfully entertained by Aidan’s witty spin on familiar characters and events.

Mr. Darcy Takes a WifeMr. Darcy Takes a Wife: Pride and Prejudice Continues Others Fan Fiction

This rollicking sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was originally self-published in 1999 as The Bar Sinister. In Berdoll’s wild, bawdy, and utterly enjoyable novel, the Darcys begin their married life as one of the happiest, most in-love couples imaginable. Berdoll picks up the story after their wedding, but flashes back to the days after the courtship, when Elizabeth and Darcy’s passion for each other grew stronger. After a spicy wedding night, the couple finds their compatibility extends far beyond their matched wits. As Elizabeth settles into her role as mistress of a large household, her sister Jane grapples with her own, less passionate marriage to Charles Bingley. Thrown in as well are an illegitimate young man who just might be Darcy’s son, a vengeful serving man who plagues the Darcys and develops an unhealthy fixation on Elizabeth, and suspicions of infidelity. Austenites who enjoy the many continuations of her novels will find much to love about this wild ride of a sequel, especially Berdoll’s depiction of the enduring, strong love between Elizabeth and Darcy.

Darcy and ElizabethDarcy & Elizabeth: Nights and Days at Pemberley (Pride & Prejudice Continues) Others Fan Fiction

Berdoll’s second lighthearted romp through Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice set (following Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife) turns nasty. Things start off sweetly as the terminally dignified Darcy returns from the continent to greet wife Elizabeth and the twins she has borne in his absence. Despite initial annoyance engendered by Elizabeth’s recuperation, during which sex is rather out of the question, hearth and home soon return to normal. However, dealing with Darcy’s conniving aunt, Lady De Bourgh, as well as the machinations of his troublesome sister-in-law, Lydia, and his arch-rival and nemesis Wickham (here truly evil), threaten their domestic happiness. Elizabeth takes all this circumspectly but with keen concern; between bouts of marital jollity, she provides Darcy with wise and commendable counsel. The story is thick in period trappings and language; the secondary characters and tangential story lines are Dickensian to a fault and the ending is very deus ex machina. But Berdoll’s take on Darcy & Co. contains enough pleasures to overcome overwriting and underplotting.

Amanda Grange – Jane Austen Heroes Diary Series

Mr. Darcy's DiaryMr. Darcy’s Diary Others Fan Fiction

Joining a growing field of Austeniana and, particularly, Darcyiana Grange retells Austen’s Pride & Prejudice from Fitzwilliam Darcy’s point of view. Her device for doing so is an imagined diary of a clever sort: Grange reproduces, word for word and comma for comma, conversations from the original novel, but shifts the perspective to reported speech in Darcy’s first-person, with his commentary on the encounters. Between the reconstituted passages, the reader is treated to Darcy’s ongoing reflections on Hertfordshire society, his family obligations, his sister and, most crucially, Elizabeth Bennet and her family. There are also wholly invented conversations, most engagingly between Bingley and Darcy as they try to resist the pull of Netherfield Hall. On the whole, however, the diary is awkward in tone and lacks the polish and poise of Austen’s creation (which some of the sequels have managed to approximate). There’s a decidedly introspective quality to the observations not befitting the very unmodern, unintrospective nobleman. It simply doesn’t sound like Darcy.

Witty and amusing, this novel captures the original style, themes and sardonic humor of Jane Austen’s novel while turning the entire story on its head in a most engaging and entertaining fashion. Darcy’s Passions tells the story of Fitzwilliam Darcy and his obsession with the most impossible woman-Elizabeth Bennet.

It presents Darcy as a man in turmoil. His duty to his family and his estate demand he choose a woman of refined tastes. Yet, what his mind tells him to do and what his heart knows to be true are two different things. He loves a woman he first denies for being unworthy, but it is he who is found wanting when Elizabeth Bennet refuses his proposal of marriage. Devastated, he must search his soul and transform himself into the man she can love and respect.

Fitzwilliam Darcy in the original Pride and Prejudice is a major “minor” character. He is the hero of the tale, but the reader never really knows how he creates the changes we accept as part of his personality. This book tells how Darcy found the way within himself to become the hero, and not the villain, of this beloved tale.

But while Lizzie has her attention on those at Pemberley and Rosings, intrigue is afoot at her former home of Longbourn, where her sisters, Kitty and Mary, and, more alarmingly, her father, seem to have all fallen under the spell of a certain Mrs Castlemain. Only one more thing is needed for Elizabeth and Darcy’s happiness to be complete. But, in the meantime, Darcy is once again confronted with the shadows of the past, and Elizabeth is horrified to find that she might be turning into her mother!
